Tag: Irish-Americans Heritage Month, St. Patrick’s Day

Originally a religious holiday to honor St. Patrick, who introduced Christianity to Ireland in the fifth century, St. Patrick’s Day has evolved into a celebration of drinking and all things Irish.  As we celebrate the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day, MineMR also looked at the Irish-American population in the US.  This is quite fascinating since, according to the Census Bureau, 33.1 million (10.4%) of US residents claimed Irish ancestry.  The Irish-American population number is more than seven times the population of Ireland itself (4.6 million).  In the US, Irish is the second highest claimed European ancestry, trialing German.  Furthermore, the Irish-American population in the US show higher household income and home ownership compared to the US national average rates.
